The Army v Navy match is the last fixture on the Senior Rugby Union calendars of both the Royal Navy and the Army. It is the last of three matches that construct make up the Inter-Services Championship. The men’s match has been held annually since 1907 when it was held at the Queen’s Club, West Kensington.
The men’s fixture has only been missed on three occasions: the break-in play during the first world war, again during the second world war and most recently due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2022 match will be the 103rd time the Army v Navy Senior XV match has been contested.
The women’s match was first introduced in 2003. This year the women’s match will be held at Twickenham for the first time – having originally been scheduled to debut in 2020. The match will see the 18th time the Army and Navy Senior XV women meet.
The Army vs Navy Match is also a reunion event, where serving and veteran members of the armed forces can catch up with old friends.
The event has grown in popularity – it first sold out in 2015 and tickets to the event are increasingly sought after. Tickets sell out in hours and the crowd is expected to exceed 80,000.
All proceeds from the match go to the Royal Navy Rugby Union and the Army Rugby Union Trust.
