We use What3Words to complement our existing address technology to help us to navigate hard-to-find addresses or a route to off-grid locations. It is also useful where a building has multiple entrances and exit points, so we can ensure we pick up our client from the right place, every time.

What3words divides the world into a grid of three-metre squares and gives each location a three-word identifier. Entering ///petal.maybe.bunny, for example, will take you to Manchester Arena. But if you need to be picked up at the entrance then you could be more specific by entering ///line.broker.units; or ///entry.snow.mixed if you need collecting from the artist’s entrance at the rear.

Being so precise with locations means our drivers can avoid some of the challenges of street addresses. A postal address will often drop a GPS pin right in the centre of the building – which can be difficult if it is a large office building, airport or hospital that has multiple entrances – or if the pick-up point is not at the location that a satellite navigation system would direct you to. In fact, only a third of postal addresses lead to the front door of a building, with most identifying only a building, street or, in the worst case, the general area.
