The Blackpool Illuminations occupy an unusual place in the North West calendar. They are free, they run for four months, and they are seen by more people than almost any ticketed event in the region, yet the experience is shaped almost entirely by how a visitor arrives and leaves. Six miles of Promenade lit from Starr Gate in the south to Red Bank Road at Bispham makes for a memorable drive and a difficult parking problem, particularly on a Saturday in October. The 2026 Switch-On takes place on Friday 4 September at the Tower Festival Headland, on the seafront directly beneath Blackpool Tower. Gates open in the late afternoon with live music through the evening, Paddy McGuinness performs the switch itself at around a quarter past nine, and free tickets for the event are allocated by public ballot rather than sold. Those without tickets watch from the Promenade, where the atmosphere is considerable and the crowd is very large indeed. The preview night, known as Ride The Lights, falls a few days earlier on Tuesday 1 September, when the Promenade is closed to traffic and given over to cyclists and pedestrians before the season proper begins.
After the opening weekend the lights are illuminated nightly, switching on at dusk and running through the autumn and the Christmas period into the new year. The switch-on time moves earlier as the evenings draw in, which is worth knowing when planning a visit, because a party leaving Manchester at six o’clock in September will arrive before dark and a party leaving at the same hour in November will not.
Why the Journey Is the Deciding Factor
Blackpool is reached from most of the North West by the same funnel. The M55 is the only motorway into the town and it delivers everything arriving from the M6, which means that on Switch-On night and on Saturday evenings through October the final few miles are the slowest part of the journey by a considerable margin. From Manchester the route runs by way of the M61 and the M6 before joining the M55, a distance of around fifty five miles. From Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area the M58 provides the link to the M6, with Preston sitting roughly two thirds of the way along either route.
Parking is the second constraint and the more frustrating one. Seafront spaces along the Golden Mile are heavily used from mid afternoon during the season, the multi storey car parks fill on event nights, and a driver who has just spent ninety minutes on the motorway is rarely in the mood to circle side streets. Being set down at an agreed point on the Promenade and collected from the same point later removes both the search and the walk back to a distant space in the cold. The Illuminations were designed to be seen slowly from a moving vehicle, and a passenger who is not concentrating on the car in front sees a great deal more of them.
Driving the Lights
The classic way to experience the display is to travel the length of the Promenade at low speed, taking in the tableaux and the illuminated features in sequence rather than walking a short section. From the southern end at Starr Gate the route runs north past the Pleasure Beach, the Tower and the piers before reaching Bispham, and the full run takes considerably longer than the mileage suggests because the traffic is deliberately slow. Heritage illuminated trams also run along the seafront during the season, and the sight of them passing is part of the experience for many visitors.
For a group travelling together, the practical decision is where to walk and where to ride. A common arrangement is to be set down near the Tower for an hour on foot around the busiest and most photographed section, then to rejoin the vehicle and travel the northern stretch towards Bispham in comfort. That sequence works far better than attempting either the whole thing on foot or the whole thing from the road.

Illuminations trips are rarely made alone. Planning an Evening
Bookings for Switch-On night and for Saturdays in October are made well ahead, as these are the busiest dates of the season by a wide margin. Midweek visits in late September and early October offer the same display with a fraction of the traffic, and for families with young children the earlier switch-on times of late October are worth planning around. Collection points on the Promenade are agreed in advance and confirmed by message on the night, so that nobody is left standing on the seafront in a crowd trying to describe where they are.
