This years Grand National will be the 175th annual running of the prestigious horse race at Aintree Racecourse. The Grand National 2023 event takes place from 13th April 2023 to Saturday 15th April 2023 and is one of the highlights of the social calendar in Liverpool.

The history of the Grand National can be traced back to the early 1800s. Back in February 1839, the first winner of the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase was named Lottery – that race that would eventually become known as the Grand National. Lottery was the 5/1 favourite after a victory at the Cheltenham Steeplechase. Back then, horses had to jump a stone wall, cross some ploughed land and then jump over two hurdles to finish.
The current course, which now stages races over the familiar fences and hurdles, opened in 1839. During a difficult period for Aintree after the war, the racecourse was sold to a property developer, leading to concerns about the future of the Grand National race. Ladbrokes, the bookmakers, stepped in to manage the Grand National from then until 1984, when Seagram Distillers took over as sponsors.
On this solid foundation, Aintree’s revival was built. Today it is owned and managed by Jockey Club Racecourses, as one of 15 tracks operated by The Jockey Club’s subsidiary. In 2014 the Grand National first featured a seven-figure prize fund.
