Glastonbury is a five-day festival of performing arts in Pilton, Somerset. As well as contemporary music, the festival also hosts dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and many other arts. Glastonbury is attended by about 200,000 people, with a record 300,000 people at the 1994 festival, which was headlined by the Levellers.
Glastonbury is a major event in British culture, inspired by the ethos of the hippie and the 1960s counterculture movement. These traditions are maintained in the Green Fields area, which has sections called Green Futures and the Healing Field. Founder Michael Eavis hosted the first festival, which was then known as the Pilton Festival, after he saw an open-air Led Zeppelin show in 1970.
The festival was held intermittently between 1970 and 1981, and has taken place most years since, except for five-yearly “fallow years” that give the land, the local population, and the organisers a break.
